What is CNC Grinding?
CNC grinding is one of the CNC machining operations that uses computer control to guide the movement of the grinding wheel to precisely remove material from the workpiece (from metals and ceramics to plastics and composites) to achieve a high-precision surface quality. This high-precision process is controlled by a CNC (Computer Numerical Control) system, which ensures accuracy and repeatability of the machining task.
CNC grinding operations vary, from surface grinding of flat surfaces to cylindrical grinding of cylindrical parts. Each type of grinding requires specific CNC machine setup and programming to achieve the desired accuracy and surface quality. In cylindrical grinding, for example, the workpiece rotates in sync with the grinding wheel, allowing for precise shaping and finishing.
One of the hallmarks of CNC grinding is its exceptional precision. CNC systems precisely control every aspect of the grinding process, from the speed of the grinding wheel to its path through the workpiece. This precision makes CNC grinding an integral part of modern manufacturing, especially for industries that require titanium parts with extremely tight tolerances.
Benefits of CNC Grinding
CNC grinding offers a wide range of benefits that help drive excellence in modern manufacturing; these include:
Accuracy
CNC grinding services are renowned for their ability to deliver extremely precise dimensions and surface finishes. Using CNC grinding and specialized grinding tools, parts can be manufactured down to the micron level. This high level of precision makes CNC grinding the best choice for tasks that require exacting precision.
Superior surface quality
Generally speaking, CNC grinders equipped with advanced grinding tools can achieve an accuracy of approximately 0.001 inch (0.025 mm), and in some cases, even higher. These machines are often used in industries that require extremely high precision, such as aerospace and precision instrumentation.
Complex Geometries
With CNC grinding, it becomes feasible to create complex shapes and features that may be challenging or impossible with manual grinding. This capability opens up new avenues in design and manufacturing, allowing for the production of more complex and sophisticated products.
Automated Process
The automation inherent in CNC grinding reduces the need for manual intervention. This increases operational efficiency and significantly reduces labor costs. Automation can also reduce production time, increase overall productivity and minimize manual intervention.
Versatility
CNC grinders can handle a variety of materials, from metals to plastics and ceramics. CNC systems are easy to program and allow custom grinding tasks. This adaptability means unique and specialized designs can be accommodated, providing a high degree of flexibility in the manufacturing process.
Cost savings
CNC grinding offers significant cost savings compared to traditional machining methods. CNC grinding helps manufacturers increase efficiency and reduce cost per part by optimizing material use, reducing scrap and streamlining production processes.
One-stop solution for precision CNC grinding
Wstitanium’s in-house advanced CNC grinders and optical profile grinders to complete ID/OD grinding and fixture/surface grinding can grind not only cylindrical parts, but also unique shapes and round diameters. For fixture/surface grinding, our CNC and manual fixture equipment allows us to grind holes and complex shapes to very precise tolerances, and also grind high tolerance parts to a mirror-like surface finish while meeting flatness, parallelism and perpendicularity requirements.
CNC grinding is not a single process. It includes a variety of types, each tailored to meet specific needs. Understanding these different types will give you a clearer understanding of how various industries have adopted CNC grinding to achieve precision and high-quality titanium parts surface finish. The diversity of CNC grinding types is a testament to its versatility. Whether you are dealing with surface grinding or cylindrical grinding, each type has its own unique methods and applications.
Surface Grinding
Surface grinding is the process of grinding flat surfaces of metal or non-metal materials with a rotating wheel composed of abrasive particles. It is designed to remove oxide layers and impurities to achieve a polished, enhanced, high-precision surface. The workpiece is often firmly fixed to a table to facilitate back and forth and side-to-side movement of the rotating grinding wheel, allowing complex shapes and features to be ground on the workpiece. For example, automotive manufacturing companies may rely on surface grinding to achieve a flawless surface finish on critical vehicle parts such as crankshafts, piston rods or engine valves.
Cylindrical Grinding
Cylindrical grinding refers to the use of a cylindrical grinding machine equipped with a special grinding wheel as a cutting tool to precisely remove the surface layer of a cylindrical workpiece. Wstitanium specializes in precision cylindrical grinding, which is a precision grinding service for the inner diameter (ID) and outer diameter (OD) of cylindrical parts, and excels in processing parts with various features such as grooves, radii and tapers. Precision internal/external cylindrical grinding can provide better part-to-part consistency, especially for parts with higher requirements for size, roundness, concentricity and surface finish.
Centerless Grinding
Centerless grinding helps eliminate the need for workholding devices or center holes in the workpiece. This process deploys a larger grinding wheel and a smaller guide wheel. The workpiece is resting on the work rest blade and held between the two wheels, with the larger wheel performing the cutting task. Centerless grinding is ideal for mass production of cylindrical parts such as dowel pins or shafts where precision and speed are critical. The centerless grinding process achieves tight tolerances and smooth surfaces, which are critical for components such as drive shafts and threaded parts.
Internal Grinding
Internal grinding is similar to boring in a lathe. Internal grinding machines are used to precisely finish parts with tapered, straight or formed holes. It uses a small wheel mounted on a slender spindle that is introduced into the interior of the workpiece. The wheel spins at high speeds, removing material and creating a smooth internal surface. This is very beneficial for parts that require a precise inside diameter or a smooth inside surface. Internal grinding is ideal for machining complex internal contours and surfaces within hollow parts, and is able to create complex internal geometries that are difficult to achieve with other grinding methods.
Creep feed grinding
Creep feed grinding involves a grinding wheel slowly carving a deep profile into a workpiece. This precision grinding method is often employed when the workpiece requires complex, precision features. For example, an aerospace parts manufacturer might deploy creep feed grinding to create complex shapes and profiles in turbine blades and vanes.
Gear Grinding
After heat treating, gears are carefully ground to achieve a very fine finish and high precision. Automakers can use this technology to finish gears that are integral to transmissions. Grinding generally improves the wear resistance of gear teeth and can correct minor errors in involute profile, helix angle, pitch and concentricity that occur during the shaping, cutting or heat treating of the gears.
