EDM Machining for Titanium Parts
EDM Machining is a new form of precision machining invented in the 1940s. It is a subtractive process that uses heat energy rather than mechanical force to remove material from a workpiece. Under some necessary conditions, EDM has become the first choice for manufacturing titanium parts with unparalleled precision and versatility. For example, when machining processes such as CNC milling and CNC turning cannot produce the required cuts (such as sharp internal corners or particularly deep cavities), engineers often turn to EDM.
What is EDM Machining?
EDM or electrical discharge machining is a machining technique that makes parts without direct contact with the workpiece and is used to create complex geometries and cavities in very hard, difficult to machine materials. The workpiece and electrode are immersed in a dielectric fluid (usually paraffin or kerosene) and the high potential on the electrode finds a path to ground through the workpiece. A rapidly pulsed high voltage discharge (spark) travels across the gap between the electrode and the grounded workpiece. Each spark creates a local temperature spike of up to 12,000 °C. This temperature melts/vaporizes some of the workpiece (and electrode).
Removal of cutting debris is important to avoid shorting, so drills and punching tools use Z cycles, where the electrode feed of wire cutting achieves the same effect. Even the hardest, most difficult materials can be cut and machined with local heating and virtually no macroscopic forces, provided the material is conductive. This results in very low deformation and does not add meaningful residual stresses to the workpiece. It also allows the cutting of very thin sections and delicate features that would otherwise be impossible with mechanical tool-based machining. This technology has revolutionized many aspects of tool manufacturing. It eliminates the design limitations imposed by the need for a rotating tool, allowing for complex features that could not otherwise be achieved. It uses electricity to erode the surface of conductive materials. EDM can maintain a good surface finish even on intricate and sensitive items.
Wstitanium EDM Machining Services
Wstitanium is one of the leading EDM service providers in China. With a focus on EDM technology, Wstitanium has invested in precision sinker EDM machines and wire-cut EDM equipment, and has the ability to cost-effectively manufacture custom precision, small, and complex titanium parts.
Wstitanium offer sink EDM services, wire-cut EDM services, and hole EDM services for manufacturing extremely hard conductive materials with tight tolerances, small inner radii, and complex shapes that cannot be manufactured by CNC milling or turning. The EDM services provided by Wstitanium are used in molds, medical, aerospace, defense, automotive, robotics, electronics, and other fields. Combined with other manufacturing technologies such as turning, milling, grinding, finishing, heat treatment, surface coating, and assembly, the closed loop of the industrial chain for manufacturing custom parts is completed.
Types of Wstitanium EDM Machining
When you need to manufacture custom, complex hard metal parts, electrical discharge machining (EDM) is the most efficient process. At Wstitanium, we select the most appropriate type of EDM based on your specifications so that you get the same, high-quality, high-tolerance results time and time again.
SINKER EDM SERVICES
Sinking EDM is used to create complex shaped cavities in a workpiece. To do this, the tool must be in the form of a positive replica of the desired cavity. The forming tool (or die) is usually made of graphite, copper or tungsten (CNC machined). During sinker EDM, the tool is slowly lowered (sunk) into the workpiece, eroding the material and forming a cavity that matches the shape of the tool, maintaining a consistent spark gap as it descends.
WIRE EDM SERVICES
Wire EDM uses a thin wire as a tool that does not come into contact with the workpiece. A thin wire is held between two diamond guides, one above and one below the workpiece, and moves along the X and Y axes according to CNC instructions. (The upper guide can also move along other axes to allow for more complex cuts.) The current discharge causes sparks between the wire and the workpiece, which can cause workpiece erosion.
EDM Hole Drilling
Hole Drill EDM Machining is designed to drill small and deep holes. These holes can be as small as 0.065 mm in diameter and up to 1 m deep. The electrodes are usually made of tungsten, graphite, brass or copper. As the electrode approaches the workpiece, the spark evaporates and erodes a small portion of the workpiece; continuing, the hole becomes deeper and deeper.
Typical EDM Materials
The materials most commonly machined using the EDM process are those that are difficult to machine by other means (such as CNC machining), such as tungsten, molybdenum, titanium, austenitic stainless steel, and other carbides. These materials become increasingly difficult to cut during CNC machining because they harden as they are machined. This hardening often reduces the accuracy of part features.
