Manufacturing Titanium Fasteners for Bicycles

CNC machining is the core process in Wstitanium’s titanium fastener manufacturing. Milling, turning, and drilling are performed using programmable machine tools, ensuring that each product meets stringent standards for dimensional tolerances and geometric accuracy.

Raw Materials

Wstitanium prefers Gr5 (Ti-6Al-4V) titanium as its raw material. This grade, with its optimal balance of aluminum and vanadium, achieves an ideal balance between strength (tensile strength exceeding 900 MPa), toughness, and machinability.

CNC Machining

Multi-axis CNC machining is used for a wide variety of titanium fasteners for bicycles, including bolts, nuts, washers, and shafts, often featuring complex features such as internal threads, countersunk heads, and stepped surfaces. Wstitanium invested in a production line consisting of a 5-axis CNC machining center and a CNC lathe, achieving “one-step clamping, multiple process completion,” significantly reducing clamping errors.

CNC Turning: CNC lathes perform end-turning and external turning of titanium rods to determine bolt length and shank diameter, with strict tolerances of ±0.02mm.

Threading: Custom carbide taps are used for internal thread tapping or external thread rolling. To address the high viscosity and tool sticking of titanium alloys, tapping is performed at a low speed (80-120 rpm) with an intermittent feed mode. External thread rolling uses cold plastic deformation to form threads. Compared to cutting, the thread surface features continuous metal fibers, increasing strength by 15%-20%.

Head Forming: The milling function of a 5-axis machining center is used to form hexagonal, cross, or internal hexagonal grooves on the bolt head. The milling cutter speed is controlled at 3000-5000 rpm, and layered milling reduces cutting forces, ensuring burr-free groove edges and sharp corners.

Precision Drilling: Deep-hole drilling technology is used for components such as hollow quick-release shafts. Hole depth-to-diameter ratios can reach over 10:1. A high-pressure coolant system promptly removes chips to prevent scratches on the hole wall, and the hole axis straightness error does not exceed 0.01mm/m.

Each machine is equipped with an online inspection probe that provides real-time dimensional data feedback through contact measurement to ensure dimensional consistency for every product.

Fasteners with non-standard dimensions (such as special lengths and unusual head shapes) can be processed to meet the needs of specialized models such as retro bicycles and modified vehicles.

In addition to standard natural anodizing and TiN coating options, we also offer colored anodizing finishes such as black and blue to complement the vehicle’s exterior. Wstitanium also offers sandblasted matte and passivation finishes. Custom logos can be laser-engraved on the fastener heads to enhance personalization.

Wstitanium anodized titanium fasteners can withstand over 500 hours of salt spray without noticeable rust, while TiN-coated products can withstand over 1,000 hours, far exceeding steel fasteners (approximately 24-72 hours) and aluminum alloy fasteners (approximately 100-200 hours).
