Rainbow Colors

Rainbow colors are not the natural hue of titanium, but rather the interference color of an oxide film formed through precision surface treatment techniques. Different techniques determine color stability, wear resistance, and texture. Currently, mainstream technologies can be divided into three categories:

(I) Anodizing: The Cost-Effective Option

Anodizing is the most mature titanium alloy coloring technology. It involves placing a titanium fastener as the anode in an electrolyte (such as oxalic acid or sulfuric acid). An electric current is applied to form an oxide film (TiO₂) of controllable thickness on the surface. Different oxide film thicknesses interfere with light to varying degrees, resulting in different colors within the rainbow spectrum. A film thickness of 10-20nm results in yellow, 30-40nm results in blue, and 50-60nm results in purple. By precisely controlling the voltage and electrolysis time, single-color, gradient, or rainbow-colored effects can be achieved.

Advantages: Mature technology, low cost, high color saturation, and mass production capabilities; the oxide film adheres tightly to the substrate, and basic wear resistance meets standards.

Limitations: Film thickness typically does not exceed 100nm and is susceptible to fading with long-term exposure to UV rays and high temperatures. Scratch resistance is relatively weak, making it suitable for interior trim or non-friction areas.

Applications: Interior panel fasteners and engine compartment trim in non-high-temperature areas.

(II) PVD Coating: A Balance of Performance and Aesthetics

PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) is the preferred coloring technology for high-end titanium fasteners. By using sputtering and evaporation in a vacuum environment, elements such as titanium, chromium, and nitrogen are deposited on the surface of titanium fasteners, forming a composite coating that combines color and protective properties. Common PVD rainbow-colored coatings are a combination of TiN (titanium nitride) and TiCN (titanium carbonitride). By adjusting the coating composition ratio, a rainbow gradient effect from red to purple can be achieved.

Advantages: Coating thickness can reach 0.5-5μm, with a hardness exceeding HV2000 (five times that of stainless steel), scratch resistance, high temperature resistance (withstands temperatures exceeding 600°C), and extremely stable color, with no noticeable fading after five years of outdoor exposure.

Limitations: High equipment cost, with unit prices 2-3 times higher than those of anodized products; complex fasteners are prone to uneven coating.

Applications: Wheel hub fasteners, exposed chassis parts, and high-temperature areas in the engine compartment.

(III) Micro-arc oxidation: The ultimate protection against extreme environments

Micro-arc oxidation (MAO), also known as plasma electrolytic oxidation, is an advanced process based on anodizing. It generates micro-arc discharges on the titanium surface through high pressure and high temperature, forming a ceramic oxide film 10-100μm thick under high pressure and high temperature. By adding rare earth elements or metal oxide additives, the oxide film can exhibit iridescent colors, combining the hardness of ceramic with the toughness of titanium.

Advantages: The oxide film can achieve a hardness of HV1500-2500, offering corrosion resistance far exceeding that of anodizing and PVD, and can withstand attack from strong acids and alkalis. It also offers excellent high-temperature resistance, making it suitable for high-temperature applications such as exhaust systems, exceeding 800°C.

Limitations: Technically complex, with a long production cycle and the highest cost. The coating surface is slightly rough, and the color is less refined.

Applications: Fasteners for racing exhaust systems and off-road vehicle exhaust systems.
