Advantages of 5-Axis CNC Machining of Titanium Parts
Titanium, with its high specific strength, excellent corrosion resistance, good biocompatibility, and high-temperature stability, has become one of the core structural materials in high-end manufacturing. However, titanium has characteristics such as poor thermal conductivity, work hardening, rapid tool wear, and difficulty in machining complex structures. When machining titanium parts using 3-axis CNC, multiple clamping and fixtures are often required, resulting in large cumulative errors, low yield rates, significantly longer delivery times, and increased costs. 5-axis CNC machining is the optimal solution to the manufacturing challenges of complex titanium parts.
1. Single-Setup, Eliminating Cumulative Errors
5-axis CNC machining completes the machining of all external surfaces, bevels, and inclined holes of a part in a single setup. No manual intervention is required. All features are based on the same coordinate system, eliminating accumulated clamping errors at the source.
2. Machining Complex Surfaces and Deep Cavities
Titanium impellers, impeller disks, artificial joints, and irregularly shaped cavities contain numerous continuous twisted surfaces and deep cavities. 5-axis CNC machining centers enable continuous milling, resulting in more uniform surface finish.
3. Tight Tolerances
Titanium parts such as aerospace brackets and optical equipment cavities typically contain dozens of holes and faces at different angles. Strict positional, coaxial, and parallelism requirements exist between these features. 5-axis machining ensures batch-to-batch dimensional consistency, with tolerances less than 0.01mm.
4. High Efficiency
5-axis machining requires only general-purpose soft jaws and chucks for clamping, eliminating the need for custom-made fixtures. This not only saves on fixture development costs but also reduces production cycles from days to hours. For orders of multi-variety, small-batch titanium parts, 5-axis machining enables rapid turnaround.

3+2 Axis vs. 5-Axis CNC Machining
3+2 axis vs 5-axis CNC machining differ significantly in application, tolerances, and cost. Wstitanium automatically selects the most cost-effective solution based on your part’s structure.
3+2 Axis CNC Machining
3+2 axis machining involves first rotating the A and C rotary axes to a specified angle and locking them, then performing cutting along the X, Y, and Z linear axes. Essentially, it’s “fixed-angle 3-axis machining.”
Advantages: High machine tool rigidity, high cutting stability, simple programming, high machining efficiency, and shorter single-piece machining time. Low machine tool wear, and machining costs are 30%-50% lower than 5-axis linkage.
Applications: Most multi-faceted titanium parts, including aerospace brackets, housings, valves, multi-faceted part systems, and inclined cavities, covering over 80% of 5-axis titanium machining needs.

Simultaneous 5-Axis CNC Machining
In 5-axis simultaneous machining, the X, Y, and Z linear axes and the A and C rotary axes move simultaneously, allowing the tool to continuously cut along any spatial trajectory.
Advantages: Machining arbitrarily complex continuous curved surfaces. Completes the machining of the entire surface in a single pass, without tool marks. Machining parts with complex cavities and inverted structures, such as impellers, impeller disks, artificial joint spherical surfaces, irregular curved surfaces, spiral grooves, and other parts with continuous spatial curved surfaces.
Applications: Parts with continuous spatial curved surfaces, such as impellers, spherical surfaces, irregular curved surfaces, and helical grooves.
Cost: 5-axis CNC machining requires higher machine tool precision, programming capabilities, and cutting tools. Programming and machining times are longer. The cost per part is higher than 3+2 axis machining. If the part does not have continuous curved surface features, Wstitanium does not recommend 5-axis CNC machining to avoid a significant increase in cost.

Machining Capabilities for Thin-Walled Titanium Parts
Titanium’s elastic modulus is approximately half that of steel. Machining thin-walled parts presents significant challenges. Wstitanium ensures tolerances for thin-walled parts through the following techniques:
Clamping Optimization: Vacuum chucks, specialized soft jaws, and auxiliary supports are used to distribute clamping forces and prevent deformation.
Toolpath Optimization: High-speed, shallow-depth climb milling and layered milling control the cutting force within the material deformation threshold.
Stress Relief: Low-temperature stress-relief annealing is performed after roughing to release internal material stress and prevent deformation after finishing.
Amendment Control: A 0.05-0.1mm allowance is left during finishing, with a final pass for smoothing to ensure dimensional and surface quality.

For standard structures, a 0.3mm wall thickness for titanium parts is acceptable. The height-to-wall-thickness ratio should not exceed 10:1. For ultra-thin-walled, large-cavity structures, Wstitanium provides specific feasibility assessments and structural optimization suggestions during the Design for Manufacturing (DFM) stage.
Deep Hole Machining Capability
Drilling presents challenges due to chip removal difficulties and concentrated heat. With conventional drills, holes with a length-to-diameter ratio exceeding 5:1 are prone to problems such as tool breakage, rough hole walls, and poor straightness. Wstitanium’s 5-axis machine tools are equipped with high-pressure internal cooling systems, paired with internally cooled carbide drills.
Conventional Drilling: For length-to-diameter ratios up to 10:1, standard internally cooled drills are used to consistently ensure hole tolerances and surface quality.
Deep Hole Machining: For length-to-diameter ratios from 10:1 to 20:1, deep hole drilling cycles are employed with staged tool retraction and chip removal to ensure hole straightness.
Ultra-deep holes exceeding 20:1 require gun drilling. Wstitanium assesses feasibility.
All hole machining can guarantee H7 tolerances with a surface roughness Ra≤3.2μm, and reaming can achieve Ra≤1.6μm.
Acceptable Titanium Grades
All titanium grades are acceptable. All raw materials are sourced from well-known Chinese titanium manufacturers (BaoTi Co., Ltd., Western Superconducting Technologies, ATI (USA), Toho (Japan), etc.). Each batch of materials comes with original manufacturer material certificates, supporting full-process traceability. Wstitanium has corresponding mature milling technology for the characteristics of different grades.
Grade 1 Titanium
Grade 1 titanium has low hardness and high viscosity, making it prone to tool sticking during cutting and easily generating built-up edge. Wstitanium uses sharp carbide tools with a large rake angle, combined with high cutting speeds and sufficient cooling, to avoid tool sticking and consistently control surface quality. Typical parts: chemical pipeline flanges, marine sensor housings, medical stents, fasteners.
Grade 2 Titanium
Grade 2 titanium is the most widely used industrial pure titanium. It has excellent overall formability and weldability. Its cutting characteristics are similar to Grade 1. Wstitanium optimizes feed rate and depth of cut, balancing machining efficiency and surface quality. Typical parts: valve assemblies, heat exchanger baffles, marine hinges, medical housings, chemical pump bodies.
Grade 5 / Ti-6Al-4V
Grade 5 / Ti-6Al-4V is Wstitanium’s most experienced grade. Roughing is done with coated carbide end mills. Finishing is done with ultra-fine grain carbide or PCD tools. Medium cutting speeds and large feed rates are used to avoid excessive cutting temperatures. Typical applications: aerospace structural components, engine parts, racing car parts, medical, fasteners, marine.
Grade 7 Titanium
Grade 7 titanium is pure titanium with the addition of 0.12%-0.25% palladium, making it a corrosion-resistant and strengthened type of pure titanium. It is the preferred material for highly corrosive chemical applications. Its machinability is close to that of Grade 2 pure titanium. Due to the higher material cost, Wstitanium improves material utilization and reduces costs. Typical parts: chemical valves, pressure hulls for deep-sea submersibles.
Grade 9 Titanium
Its machinability falls between that of pure titanium and Grade 5. Thin-walled tube machining requires careful control of clamping deformation and cutting vibration. Wstitanium uses specialized fixtures with low cutting forces to ensure roundness and wall thickness uniformity. Typical parts: aerospace pipe fittings, high-pressure gas cylinder valve seats, precision conduit assemblies.
Grade 23 / Ti-6Al-4V ELI
Its excellent biocompatibility makes it the preferred material for medical implants. Wstitanium employs sharp new cutting tools for precision machining; controls cutting forces and temperatures to minimize the subsurface work-hardened layer; and performs passivation treatment to remove surface contaminants and burrs. CNC machining eliminates iron contamination, ensuring biocompatibility.
